Back in 2006, my attention was drawn to Amazon’s virtual server offering in the cloud. At the time, I decided to experiment with the platform and explore its possibilities. While the technology was not yet mature enough for large-scale production use, it was clear to me that it had enormous potential. It was definitely something worth keeping an eye on, which is exactly what I did over the following years.
As AWS continued to evolve, more and more services were introduced. The platform became increasingly mature, reliable, and capable. Less than ten years later, it seemed that every major technology publication was reporting on large organizations migrating their workloads to AWS. What had once been a promising technology was rapidly becoming the future of IT infrastructure.
I reconnected with AWS through one of my clients. This time, I was not simply experimenting; I was building real-world solutions. I invested in learning the platform, obtained AWS certifications, and before long I was developing cloud-native applications for customers together with full DevOps teams.
Working with AWS was exciting. It felt like being a child let loose in a toy store, surrounded by endless possibilities. Every service offered new opportunities to build better, faster, and more scalable solutions. The cloud allowed us to focus on innovation rather than infrastructure limitations.
One of the highlights of my career was designing the cloud-native architecture for GOPACS, the first congestion management platform in the Netherlands. GOPACS plays an important role in supporting the Dutch electricity grid during the energy transition. Being involved in the architecture of such an innovative platform is something I remain very proud of to this day.
In 2025, after many years of living and working in the Netherlands, I moved back to Curaçao and joined Ictual as a Senior Consultant. Shortly after starting at the company, I had the opportunity to work closely with my colleague Shurbann, a Solution Architect and Senior Software Engineer at Ictual. It quickly became clear that we spoke the same technical language and shared the same passion for technology, cloud computing, and software architecture. From day one, we found ourselves discussing ideas, challenging assumptions, and looking for ways to continuously improve our cloud platform and the services we provide to our customers.
Shurbann had already been responsible for the AWS environment supporting Bank Integrator, an in-house developed payment automation platform serving Curaçao and the wider Caribbean region. Coming from a software development background, he had successfully built a solid cloud architecture. In many ways, this demonstrates one of AWS's greatest strengths: it is a platform designed by developers, for developers.
Since then, we have been working together to further improve our cloud architecture. Rather than focusing on large disruptive changes, we continuously implement smaller improvements that provide significant value to the reliability, security, and continuity of our services. Our customers should never notice these changes; they should simply experience stable and reliable services while we maintain confidence that everything is running exactly as intended.
At Ictual, we have chosen a cloud-native architecture based on Docker containers for our microservices. We make extensive use of Amazon ECS because it is a managed service that requires minimal operational overhead. This allows our developers to focus on what they do best: developing applications and delivering business value instead of managing infrastructure.
Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is another key principle within our organization. We strive to avoid manual changes wherever possible, especially through the AWS Management Console. Instead, all infrastructure is deployed and managed through AWS CloudFormation stacks. This approach provides consistency, repeatability, and significantly reduces the risk of human error. It also simplifies maintenance and allows us to manage complex environments efficiently.
Cost management is equally important to us. We continuously monitor our cloud spending and follow a disciplined approach to ensure that we only run the resources we truly need. Efficient cloud usage not only reduces costs but also encourages better architectural decisions.
Currently, we are working on a fully automated deployment pipeline, much of which has already been implemented. Looking ahead, we will continue to strengthen our security posture by further embracing the principle of least privilege. Because we work extensively with banks and sensitive financial data, security is non-negotiable. Protecting customer information and ensuring that data remains secure are among our highest priorities.
For us, cloud architecture is not only about technology. It is about building reliable, secure, scalable, and maintainable systems that enable our customers to focus on their business and it gives us the confidence to sleep well at night, knowing that everything is running exactly as it should.
